2009 NFL draft- round 5 recap
By baltimore1055 on May 1, 2009 in NCAA, NFL
Round 5 is the beginning of the late rounds, and some teams got 2nd round talent suprisingly. This is supposed to be the beginning of the late round fliers, but some teams could not just pass up on a big prospect form a top school for a late round, small school pick. No disrespect from small schools, because some do produce great talent(Shannon Sharpe, Jerry Rice, Joe Horn, Marques Colston, Bart Scott, etc). Lets get at it:
The sleeper- Dallas Safety Michael Hamlin- Hamlin was a great pick at the end of round 5. He is a all-around solid Safety that can stop the run, or play coverage and pick the ball off ( 100 tackles, 6 interceptions as a senior in 2008). He is now on the same team as his older brother Ken Hamlin, who is a pro bowler, so he does have good football genetics. Hamlin is a very instinctive player who has good size. He is also very active and agressive and has good hands and can read the ball well. Even better, he was the team captain and a natural born leader, i wont say next Darren Woodson yet, but he should be a good Safety in the NFL.
The reach- Atlanta DB William Middleton- Middleton is a decent corner, but he was picked way too high right here. When you have guys like Victor Harris, Coye Francis and Captain Munnerlyn on the board still, you got to wonder why they would take a guy nobody really knows of. He doesnt have good height at 5′9, and isnt going to be very good in the run game either.
The fallers- Philadelphia TE cornellius Ingram- He was one of the top steals in this years draft, i actually had him at 2nd round. He is a great recieving TE with great hands and will be a awesome replacement for LJ Smith in Phili. I actually wanted the Ravens, my team to take him in the 4th round. The only reason i think he fell is because of the ACL injury that caused him to miss all of 2008. An honorable mention goes to Titans RB Javon Ringer.
The expected- The run of LB’s and WR’s, 6 linebackers and 4 recievers went in round 5.
Actually, this will be my last of the round recap edition, and i will start doing team draft grades. And dont forget to check out Oriolecentral.wordpress.com for my Orioles article, sorry to get off topic, but its good writing. And you can vote on the Baltimore O’s april MVP.
